Da Nang allows cruise ships to operate casinos in port

Thursday, 11 Jan, 2016 0
The coastal city of Da Nang will become the first place in Vietnam to allow visiting cruise ships to operate casinos while in port.

Starting later this month, foreign flagged ships will be permitted to legally operate their onboard casinos in Da Nang.

In the past all cruise liners have suspended gambling during sailings in Vietnam, although there is no specific law expressly forbidding it, the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said.

"We have reviewed all relevant legal documents and found no rules that require foreign ships to close certain services when docking in Vietnam," said deputy director Tran Chi Cuong.

"These services must be allowed to remain open to attract more ships to Da Nang and encourage them to stay overnight," he said.

Star Cruises’ SuperStar Libra ship will be the first to benefit when it arrives in Da Nang later this month.

Star Cruises and other cruise lines had lobbied local port officials and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism to approve the opening of shipboard casinos.

Duty-free stores aboard ships will also be permitted to open when in port.

The city’s Tien Sa Port is expected to handle more than 110 cruise ship calls and about 100,000 cruise passengers during 2016.
