Da Nang port officials dismissed after tourist boat sinking

Officials in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang have fired two port officials for failures resulting in last week’s sinking of a tourist boat which killed three people.
Cruise vessel Thao Van 2 sank in the Han River shortly after departing Da Nang claiming the lives of two young children and an adult male.
Lieutenant Colonel Dang Huu Tai, captain of the waterway traffic police said the ship was overloaded and was previously denied a license due to not meeting safety standards.
Le Sau, director of Da Nang Port and Nguyen Cong Hieu, captain of the local port management team were dismissed for failures in oversight.
Huynh Duc Tho, chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee announced the dismissals after questioning the port officials at an urgent meeting following the sinking.
Colonel Nguyen Van Chinh, deputy police director said legal proceedings would begin against the ship owner and captain.
