A teen has died and several more people were hospitalized overnight after a carbon monoxide leak at a southwestern Michigan hotel.
Workers at Quality Inn & Suites in Niles, Michigan found six children unconscious at the pool deck and alerted emergency services.
All were aged between 12 and 14 years-old Niles police said.
Bryan Douglas Watts, aged 13, was pronounced dead later in hospital.
South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Heidi Prescott said the remaining five children were then released on Sunday.
According to a MLive.com report, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide built up at the pool heater and were detected in high quantities in other areas of the hotel.
Three police officers, two hotel employees and another adult were also taken to hospital for the effects of carbon monoxide inhalation.
Carbon monoxide levels were at 800 parts per million, 16 times above the prescribed safe level, Niles Fire Capt. Don Wise told NBC affiliate WNDU.
"When we first went in, all the monitors went off. I have never seen anything like this in 30 years."
