Delta Air Lines testing facial recognition bagage drop service

Tuesday, 16 May 20173 min read

Delta Air Lines will test a new automated baggage service at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport using biometric facial recognition scanning.

The trial at MSP will begin in the summer and is spending about $600,000 on four new self-service bag drop machines, one of which will offer biometric scanning.

During the testing it will gather customer feedback with a view to expanding to other airports.

"We expect this investment and new process to save customers time and since customers can operate the biometric-based bag drop machine independently, we see a future where Delta agents will be freed up to seek out travelers and deliver more proactive and thoughtful customer service," said Gareth Joyce, Delta’s senior VP for airport customer service and cargo.

Delta customers can then keep track of their bags’ journey via the airline’s Fly Delta mobile app which provides status updates.
