Delta looking at improved domestic and expanded international routes
Delta Air Lines has a two-pronged approach to survival: push plans to add international service and at the same time upgrade some of its domestic routes.
The airline recently announced two more foreign destinations from its new hub at JBK in New York. Those routes include Bombay, India and Accra, Ghana, both scheduled for later this month.
Delta says it is now “the only airline to offer customers non-stop service to five continents from metropolitan New York.” Service to the two new routes will be on 268-seat Boeing 777-200ERs and 214-seat Boeing 767-300ER jets.
Delta also plans a high-end transcontinental service, according to USA Today.
The airline plans to renovate 100 of its 477 full-size jets for long-haul routes to include two-class cabins. The planes will have digital TV and music.
“Delta hopes to have the renovated planes flying on domestic flights longer than 1,750 miles within the next two years,” said news reports. Service on international flights is also being upgraded in an apparent effort to attract more high-fare business travelers.
