Desert tourists on theft charges
Five German tourists who went missing during a guided trip through the Sahara desert have been found again – but have been accused of stealing ancient artefacts from a national park.
According to the BBC News website, Algerian authorities say they group were found near the town of Djanet, in the country’s south; a search had been mounted after the group reportedly “gave their guide the slip”.
While no details have been released relating to what has allegedly been stolen, the offences reportedly took place in the Tassili National Park, which features on the Unesco World Heritage List.
A statement by the Algerian interior ministry reportedly says that the group will appear in court for “violation of regulations regarding the movements of tourists in the Sahara and access to Tassili National Park, as well as for theft of protected archaeological objects”.
