Disney donates USD2.5 million to Irma relief
Escaping Irma’s wrath mostly unscathed, Walt Disney World reopened for business this week in Orlando, and parent company Walt Disney Co has made a commitment to provide $2.5 million to aid community rebuilding efforts.
Money will be channelled to the relief efforts of the American Red Cross, UNICEF, Save the Children, and other nonprofits.
"As millions of people now face the daunting challenge of putting their lives and communities back together in the wake of these historic hurricanes, they need our help," Disney CEO Robert Iger said.
"We’re donating $2.5 million to support relief and recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Irma.
The company said this is on top of the nearly $16 million raised for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, which badly impacted communities in southeast Texas and Louisiana.
In addition eligible Disney employee donations to certain organizations involved in Hurricane Irma relief will be matched as part of the Disney Employee Matching Gifts program.
Images published of Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Disney Hollywood Studios showed trees down and some flooding but no apparent significant damage.
