Dom Rep resort closes after alleged violent assault prompts cancellations
The Dominican Republic resort where a woman claims she was viciously assaulted and left for dead has now closed temporarily due to a flood of cancellations.
In a letter to travel partners the Majestic Elegance Punta Cana said it will remain closed until November 7.
The alleged assault and unease over a spate of mysterious deaths of tourists has hit the company hard.
There were ‘thousands’ of cancellations at the hotel and sister properties Majestic Colonial Punta Cana and the Majestic Mirage Punta Cana.
It expects to achieve about 60% occupancy at the other two hotels for the rest of August and September and October.
Guests with bookings will be offered rooms at the other hotels in the same or a higher room category.
"Despite the cancellations, we were able to maintain 60% occupancy for our resorts during June, July and the first half of August. However, the situation is completely different for the second half of August as well as September and October," it said.
A Delaware woman claims she was assaulted at the Majestic Elegance although only went public when the hotel refused a million-dollar compensation claim.
Tammy Lawrence-Daley of Wilmington has since filed a lawsuit against the company.
Negative coverage of several deaths, which tourism officials say are unconnected, has also impacted the hotel industry across the Dominican Republic, with tainted alcohol suspected of being a factor.
