Dozens of airline passengers were injured after turbulence caused by Tropical Storm Kong-rey affected flights into Hong Kong.

Thai Airways said 39 people were hurt when an aircraft carrying 500 passengers from Bangkok to the Chinese city encountered the turbulence on Friday morning.

Kenny Kung, the airline’s sales manager, says both passengers and crew members suffered slight injuries as the plane was coming into land, with those injured being sent to three nearby hospitals.

Airline website, the Aviation Herald, said: "Passengers reported that the fasten seat belt signs had already been illuminated for a while but a number of passengers were still around the aisles of the aircraft or had not secured their seat belts when the turbulence caused all loose items and unsecured humans to lift off, impact the ceiling causing the damage to the overhead lockers and ceiling panels, and fall back onto the floor again."

Hong Kong Airlines said three passengers and three crew had also been hurt when a flight from Phuket hit "sudden turbulence" as it neared the airport.

The airline said the plane landed safely and the six injured people have since left hospital.

Hong Kong had experienced unsettled weather as Tropical Storm Kong-rey passed nearby.
