Dual of Cornwall to open soon

Tuesday, 10 July 20073 min read

Sitting bumper to bumper inching your way along the A30 towards your holiday in Cornwall could soon be a thing of the past thanks to the opening of the newly dualled A30 next week.

Dubbed the gateway to Cornwall, the Cornish leg of the A30 has notoriously been a traffic black-spot and a cause of frustration for the millions of motorists that flock into the county each year. Prior to the £93 million improvement works, mile long tail backs on the A30 were a common occurrence particularly during peak visiting periods. Stretches of single-lane carriages would inflict bottlenecks on unwitting road users and time spent hurled up in a car would eat away at holidays.

But from this month the image couldn’t be more different. Single lanes have been transformed into modern dual carriageways capable of handling Cornwall’s road traffic needs. Travel from one end of the county to the other will no longer be a stressful endurance but a chance to experience Cornwall’s scenic beauty.

With the latest tourism figures indicating that over 80% of visitors arrive in Cornwall by car the investment from the Highways Agency is clearly welcomed. Teresa Timms, VisitCornwall PR Manager, comments “The dualling of the A30 is a positive step for Cornwall’s tourist industry as well as the county’s economy as a whole. By becoming more accessible the attractiveness of Cornwall as a place to visit will improve and help to dispel the myth that Cornwall is hard to reach, hopefully encouraging first-time visitors into the county.”

Cornwall can now boast a good road network alongside its other transport links. Included in this is Newquay Cornwall Airport, one of the fastest growing regional airports in the UK, which links Cornwall to major cities across the country as well as internationally. Offering a more sustainable travel option, Cornwall’s extensive train network operates throughout the county providing an ideal way to explore without leaving your mark behind.
