Eat “Catch of the Day” the Green Way.
Vancouver Aquarium’s ‘Ocean Wise’ program for sustainable seafood in British Columbia goes nationwide in November.
You’ve downed your aperitif and quaffed your amuse-bouche. Now it’s time for the Chilean sea bass, right? Nope. Chilean sea bass is fast going the way of the dodo bird, along with all kinds of other fruits of the sea that gourmets have come to know and love. But nowadays, thanks to the Vancouver Aquarium of Vancouver, BC, you can still have your favourite delicacy courtesy of Neptune and save the planet in the process.
The aquarium founded Ocean Wise on the premise that it’s possible to eat seafood without destroying the marine environment. Begun in 2005, the conservation program helps restaurants, culinary schools, caterers and consumers to make healthy, sustainable seafood choices—and to recognize that concern for the planet is just as important as gustatory satisfaction. Ocean Wise-approved seafood is “caught or farmed in a way that ensures the long-term health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine ecosystem,” says Ocean Wise program manager Mike McDermid.
The team unveiled its first list of Ocean Wise partners on April 22 (Earth Day), 2005; in 2007, the first Ocean Wise Restaurant Directory was published listing its business partners. More than 2,000 establishments have now signed on. And come November, Ocean Wise is planning a big party in Toronto, Ontario, to launch the initiative nationwide.
“You won’t have to come to BC to help the environment and still get great seafood any more,” says McDermid. “C5 at the ROM is onside, Pangaea, EPIC at The Fairmont Royal York.”
And, with Panago Pizza on board since September 2008, there’s one other big advantage: You’ll save the planet but you don’t have to “hold the anchovies.”
