Egyptian protests leave 18 dead

Monday, 26 January 20153 min read

At least 18 people have been killed Egypt during clashes between police and protestors.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office had warned of increased tension in the country in the days leading up to January 25, the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising.

The violence, which saw three police cadets among the dead and dozens of protestors injured, followed the death of an activist in a march in Cairo on Saturday.

Authorities said that 35 people had been injured and 140 arrested after yesterday’s violence, reports the BBC.

The FCO said: "You should take extra care on 25 January 2015 (anniversary of the Egyptian revolution) and the days leading up to it. This is likely to be a period of increased tension, with a heightened risk of protests and terrorist incidents.

"Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners."
