Eilat hit by suicide bombing

Wednesday, 29 Jan, 2007 0

At least three people are reported dead in a suicide bombing in the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat.

A bakery was targeted in the attack, the first inside Israel in nine months when  a restaurant in Tel Aviv was targeted.

Eilat is on high alert after three Palestinian groups claimed responsibility for the attack.

The resort’s police commander Bruno Stein was quited by the BBC as saying: “Our assumption is that it’s not one bomber, and there might be more bombers in Eilat right now.”

Eilat is a popular winter sun destination and has largely escaped violence linked to the Palestine troubles since 2000, although it was the target of a rocket attack in 2005 in which no-one was hurt.
