Operations at Eindhoven Airport will come to a complete halt for more than five months in 2027 as extensive runway upgrades get underway. All air traffic will be suspended from February through July 19 while the airport undertakes major improvements aimed at future-proofing its infrastructure.
The airport shares a single runway with Eindhoven Air Base, meaning no flights will be able to operate during the construction period. As a result, airlines and passengers will be required to use alternative airports for approximately five and a half months.
The closure will heavily disturb passengers’ flow as Eindhoven is the second busiest airport of the Netherlands. In 2025, Eindhoven Airport handled a record 6,956,486 passengers with three airlines dominating traffic patterns: Ryanair, Transavia NL and Wizz Air.
Major infrastructure upgrades
Frédérique Portheine, Airport Operations Manager, said the closure will have wide-reaching effects: “It will be an impactful period for everyone connected to the airport. While there will temporarily be no aircraft or passengers, the airport itself will be extremely busy due to the scale of the works.”
The project includes full runway maintenance, widening of runway shoulders, and measures to improve drainage and reduce water-related issues. An aircraft arresting system will also be installed to support military fighter jet operations.
Civil aviation will benefit from several enhancements as well. A new taxiway will be added to reduce the need for aircraft to cross the runway, improving both efficiency and safety.
Flights transfer to neighboring airports
The airport will also upgrade its Instrument Landing System (ILS), including the installation of in-runway lighting. This will allow aircraft to land safely in low-visibility conditions such as dense fog—meeting a long-standing goal for the airport.
During the closure, airlines will temporarily relocate operations and adjust schedules. Travelers from the Eindhoven region will still be able to fly via nearby airports, ensuring continuity of service.
The downtime will also allow for the completion of the final phase of the airport’s terminal expansion. When operations resume on July 19, passengers can expect improved facilities, increased space, and enhanced comfort.
In response to the temporary shutdown of Eindhoven Airport, Transavia plans to operate a significant portion of its Northern Winter 2026/27 schedule from Weeze Airport (Germany) between February 1 and July 18, 2027. The carrier will fly until the end of March to 12 destinations. It will also use Maastricht airport.
So far, there is no confirmed, detailed relocation plan from either Ryanair or Wizz Air for the 2027 closure of Eindhoven Airport.
