Elderly passenger falls to death from plane

An investigation is underway after elderly passenger tragically died while being assisted exiting a plane.

The incident took place at Edinburgh Airport while the 81-year old was being deplaned on an assistance lift.

While in the Ambulift, he reportedly leaned over to pass his bag to a ground worker but then fell about six feet from the platform.

He suffered serious head injuries in the fall and died about 10 days later in hospital.

The incident occurred in late November.

The pensioner had requested special assistance to disembark from the aircraft.

The incidence is now under investigation by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive.

“We are aware of the death of an 81 year old man following a fall at Edinburgh Airport. We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased,” an airport spokesperson said.

“We are cooperating fully with regulatory authorities in their investigations.”

A spokesperson for the Crown Office said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received reports in connection with the death of an 81-year-old man in Edinburgh.”

“A joint investigation by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing and once complete will be fully considered by the Procurator Fiscal.”
