Emirates thanks Costello
Emirates has welcomed Treasurer Peter Costello’s endorsement of the company’s plans to increase significantly its presence in Australia, claiming the Treasurer is sticking up for the interests of exporters and the travelling public.
Emirates Airlines’ Australian spokesman said yesterday Mr Costello’s endorsement was in “Australia’s national interest and we applaud his remarks.”
“Emirates welcomes comments by the Treasurer that subject to Qantas getting reciprocal landing rights on routes that Emirates controls, Emirates should get landing rights and be able to service the Australian public,” the airlines’ spokesman said yesterday.
“Emirates has offered Qantas and Australian carriers unlimited access to Dubai with all available freedoms beyond Dubai within our control,” he said. “We believe totally in open skies and practice what we preach.”
This follows Mr Costello’s comments that the United Arab Emirates-based airline should be able to expand in Australia if it gave equivalent access to Qantas on the routes it controls.
It is understood Emirates has fared better than Singapore Air in persuading some Federal MPs that it poses no major threat to Qantas, given most of its passengers would not originate from Qantas’s key destinations of London or Frankfurt.
