Emperor Penguins in the Wild MUST-SEE VIDEO
Getting an eyeful of an Emperor Penguin in the bird’s natural habitat is difficult. The flightless birds spend most of the year at sea, surfacing to breed on sea ice during the darkest, coldest months of the Antarctic winter. For a few weeks in the austral spring, when the sun returns to melt the sea ice, a visit to a rookery is possible.
Quark’s Video Guide – A visit to the Snow Hill Island Rookery – shot on location – lets travelers see what a visit to the rookery is like. The Video Guide can be seen by clicking EmperorPenguinsVideo
This year Quark Expeditions offers three expeditions to the rookery, aboard its polar-class icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov. In 2009, the polar adventure company will offer three departures – but two different itineraries, one of which includes a visit to South Georgia. Emperors & Kings: Snow Hill and South Georgia is the only Antarctic expedition available that makes it possible to see Emperor and King Penguins during the same voyage.
Video Guide to South Georgia
Visiting the remote Antarctic island of South Georgia requires an investment of time as most expeditions that include the island are of 20 days or more duration. Quark’s Video Guide to South Georgia covers the history, wildlife and landscape. Much of the video was shot on location. The 2.5 minute mini-documentary is a useful tool for determining if South Georgia should be included in a traveler’s Antarctic adventure. The Video Guide can be seen by clicking on SouthGeorgisVideo
In October 2006, Quark was named a recipient of National Geographic Traveler’s “50 Tours of a Lifetime†for their “Emperor Penguin Safariâ€. In the March 2006 edition, Outside magazine named the “Emperor Penguins: Snow Hill Island Safari†as one of the New Trips of a Lifetime.
