Enjoy sustainable eco spots in Brazil
More people are looking for ecotourism in sustainable destinations than ever before, from locations to activites and hotels. Embratur, the Brazillian Tourist Board, aims to help promote the multiple destinations that strive to protect the environment.
"Brazilian destinations that offer an opportunity for collaborative, intelligent, sustainable tourism, social and environmental development strategies that guarantee the preservation of the environment and generate employment see much better results in these areas" said Embratur president, Teté Bezerra.
Many people want to travel to a tourist destination where you, while visiting, are collaborating to conserve biodiversity, local economic development and the maintenance of cultural traditions.
Brazil is full of destinations, initiatives and ventures that provide a sustainble environment. These include:
Mamiraua – Amazônia
Mamiraua is the first Brazilian Sustainable Development Reserve, and a pionner in community-based ecotourism. It is one of the greatest destinations in the Brazilian Amazon for wildlife. Located about 600 km west of Manaus and covering an area of 1,124,000 hectares, the reserve is internationally awarded for its sustainability results for biodiversity conservation.

Pantanal – Mato Grosso do Sul
Pantanal is one of the largest reservoirs of biodiversity in the world and the continent’s primary wildlife sanctuary. The conservation area is a World Natural Heritage and a Biosphere Reserve.
The freshwater wetlands support an aquatic fauna that attract larger predators, from birds to reptiles and mammals, creating the largest concentration of wildlife in the Americas – with some areas harbouring what’s believed to be the world’s highest concentration of Jaguars. Cattle breeders, attracted by the grass-covered plains, and the indigenous people of the area form the ethnic and cultural miscegenation of Pantanal, which strongly influences the tourism experience.
Visitors can meet the indigenous communities, stay on the conservation farms and taste the local cuisine – including alligator and tererê (mate ice tea cream made with ox horn).

Bonito – Mato Grosso do Sul
With crystal clear waters where you can go diving and relax while being surrounded by incredible nature and thousands of fish, it’s no wonder Bonito is considered one of the best ecotourism destinations of Brazil.
The local habitat is composed of numerous bird species such as harpy eagles, macaws, toucans and of other animals such as anteaters, armadillos, cougars, maned wolves, deer and foxes.
The town and surrounding area offers a huge selection of adventure activities such as hikes, swims under waterfalls, caving, snorkelling, rafting, horseback riding, scuba diving, mountain biking and more. Bonito’s natural wonders are a result of its limestone karst geology. Over millions of years, rainwater has eroded the area’s rock, creating sinkholes and caves, allowing visitors to bathe waterfalls and explore grottos in a part of Brazil which mixes together Cerrado and Atlantic Forest.
This region has managed to prevent the detrimental impacts of mass tourism that might effect its exquisite natural heritage through having a filter system that limits the number of people visiting at any one time. This led to the region winning the World Responsible Tourism Awards, in London.
