Ethiopia: tourism wakes up sustainably
Government establishes tourism transformation committee as country voted best tourism destination
Last year the accolade of World Best Tourism Destination was given to a surprising candidate: Ethiopia.
The country has been praised for its outstanding natural beauty, dramatic landscapes and ancient culture, leading the European Council on Tourism and Trade to select it out of 31 countries as this 2015’s top holiday spot.
Visitor numbers in the country have increased by 10% over the last decade, according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Last year, more than 600,000 tourists visited Ethiopia, attracted by its fertile national parks, 3,000 year-old archeological history and nine UNESCO world heritage sites.
Having just phased out the five year Sustainable Tourism Development Project the Ethiopian government has now launched a new initiative.
With a view to raising the standards of the tourism industry to higher level, the government has established an inclusive high level Tourism Transformation Council (TTC) chaired by Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn.
And to promote tourism resources, the newly reorganized Ethiopian Tourism Organization (ETO) is leading the tourism industry in marketing and development to make Ethiopia a top global destination.
The government plans to increase the number of tourists to one million and the revenue to three billion USD by end of this Ethiopian budget year from 770,000 tourist and over 2.9 billion US dollar revenue at the end of last year
In further advances for the tourism industry, UNESCO has selected Ethiopia to host the 11th annual session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage this coming November.
