Europcar expands presence in Japan

Europcar Mobility Group has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with MIC Co., Ltd., operator of Japan’s extensive Niconico Rent-A-Car network, marking Europcar’s first exclusive partnership in the Japanese market.

The agreement is designed to improve mobility options for the growing number of international travelers visiting Japan by making car rental bookings easier and more accessible through Europcar’s global platform.

Since April 2026, overseas travelers have been able to reserve vehicles at Niconico Rent-A-Car’s directly operated airport locations through Europcar’s international booking system. The initiative enables visitors to organize transportation before arriving in Japan using a familiar booking interface, helping reduce language and logistical barriers.

The service is currently available at several key entry points across Japan, including Tokyo-Haneda and Narita, Sapporo-New Chitose, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Kumamoto airports, as well as Shin-Yokohama Station and Kansai Airport Rinku Town Station. Niconico has over 1,450 locations in Japan.

The partnership comes as Japan sees rising inbound tourism beyond major cities and into regional destinations, increasing demand for reliable “secondary transportation” options. Car rentals are becoming increasingly important for travelers seeking flexibility outside urban centers.

To support international visitors, MIC Co., Ltd. is introducing a range of customer-focused services at participating locations. These include multilingual support through translation devices and multilingual staff, simplified rental and insurance guidance for overseas customers, and improved pick-up and drop-off services at airports and tourist hubs.

Mark Lister, Director of International Partner Development at Europcar Mobility Group, said the partnership strengthens the company’s position in Japan while improving service for global travelers.

We are delighted to welcome MIC Co., Ltd. as our exclusive partner in Japan. Niconico Rent-A-Car has a strong network and is present in all key Japanese airports and transit hubs. Their track record and expertise make them the perfect match for serving Europcar customers locally, in a context of growing international demand,” he said.

Nobuo Masuda, Representative Director of MIC Co., Ltd., added that “by combining the operational expertise we have cultivated with Europcar’s global booking platform, we will provide travelers visiting Japan with more accessible and reassuring mobility options. We will continue working to improve regional mobility convenience and address growing tourism demand.
