European Union may ban Americans

Monday, 24 Jun, 2020 0

The European Union plans to reopen borders on July 1 but Americans may not be welcome yet.

The New York Times cites a draft list of countries the EU is considering blocking which includes the US along with hard-hit Brazil and Russia.

According to the NYT, Europe has drawn up the draft blacklist based on various criteria including the number of new infections per 100,000 people.

The list would reportedly be revised every two weeks based on current infections.

The green light to enter the EU would be given to countries with an infection rate either lower or close to the EU average of 16 infections per 100,000 people over the past two weeks.

The US rate is currently at 107 per 100,000.

Visitors from China would reportedly be allowed into Europe.

"The criteria will be focused on circulation of the virus and where the virus is circulating most actively," said an EU diplomat.

The plan is being put to the nations of the EU ahead of the planned reopening date and they are being encouraged to ratify it.

With some exceptions, Europe has mostly curbed the outbreak with declining infections across most of the continent but the US is still seeing an alarming rise in Covid-19 cases across several states.
