Expedia buys into business travel
Expedia has announced plans to enter the business travel market with the purchase of US travel management firm Metropolitan Travel.
The takeover of the Seattle based independent is expected to be completed by the end of the month. It will see Expedia target the business travel market with a dedicated corporate travel division headed by corporate travel senior vice president Byron Bishop.
Mr Bishop said: “This is an opportune time to enter the corporate travel market. Small and large corporations alike are raising concerns about the rising cost of corporate travel. Meanwhile, their employees are opting for the convenience of online booking through agencies like Expedia.
“Expedia’s goal is to help businesses reduce their cost of corporate travel services with easy-to-use, comprehensive selections-all while receiving high-quality travel management services. In order to do that, we will provide a single service and technology solution for what businesses have historically obtained from separate providers.”
Expedia says that as well as gaining new business, it also expects to retain Metropolitan’s existing corporate clients which include Nordstrom, Starbucks, Avanade, Washington Mutual and Frank Russell Investment.
