Alliances announced with STI for hotels and Terrapass for carbon offsets
Expedia has recently expanded its catalogue of “Green Hotels” to some 1,700 properties all around the world, the online travel agent announced last week.
Since teaming up with the non-profit Sustainable Travel International, Expedia now offers over 1,700 hotels who prioritize environmental sustainability.
“We are pleased to be working with Sustainable Travel International as we continue to grow our green hotel offerings on Expedia.com,” said Tim MacDonald, senior vice president and general manager, Expedia.com. “We share STI’s mission to educate the world about sustainable travel. We offer green hotel choices, carbon offsets and more. This effort is in keeping with our mission to be the best place to book travel."
These “eco-accommodations” are certified by organizations including Green Seal, Green, LEEDS and STEP, are said to “balance environmental protection and social responsibility,” and fit budgets of all shapes and sizes.
Expedia has also partnered with TerraPass to create carbon offset bundles which are based on distance flown and are said to fund clean energy and carbon reduction projects.
These hotels that are classified as Eco-Friendly are those which priorities environmental sustainability, says Expedia, and have been formally recognized by a raft of certifying bodies around the world.
“At Expedia.com, we realize that green travel is an important offering to a dedicated, passionate set of travellers,” said Tim MacDonald. “By offering green-certified hotels, carbon offset options for flights and environmental travel tips, we offer a unique one-stop shop for the green traveller who is committed to travelling in a socially responsible manner.”
Green Seal, Green Key, LEEDS and STEP are several of the 80 programs recognised in Expedia’s Green Hotels Program which was launched in April of 2008
