Experience Cultural Cleveland in 2019 with a wide ranging programme of arts and cultural activities

Visitors to Cleveland looking for arts and culture will find many world-class experiences in 2019, from the traditional at the renowned Cleveland Museum of Art and the 40th anniversary of Tri-C JazzFest, to contemporary with exhibits of modern art in a 1924 rail road substation and Instagrammable art murals.

Traditional

The Tri-C JazzFest celebrates its 40th anniversary in the heart of Cleveland’s downtown performing arts district, 27-29 June 2019, with a mix of traditional and emerging musicians. Visitors can choose from ticketed performances in the restored theatres in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, to dancing the night away to live music under the bright lights of the world’s largest outdoor chandelier. For more information go to www.tri-c.edu/jazzfest/index.html

On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is the first exploration devoted to Shinto art from collections in both the US and Japan. Shinto: Discovery of the Divine in Japanese Art runs from 9 April to 30 June 2019. Other exhibits include the early works of pioneering African American photographer Gordon Parks and Colour and Comfort: Swedish Modern Design (until 9 February 2020), which highlights the modern styling of Swedish design, featuring textiles, ceramics and glass pieces from the CMA’s collection. The permanent collection at CMA is always free to view.

During the BorderLight Festival of International Theatre (25-28 July), local and international performers will converge for a citywide festival of contemporary international theatre. The festival will feature world premiere collaborations and activate performance and public spaces across the city, giving visitors a chance to see Cleveland’s world-class arts and culture scene.

Karamu House, the oldest African-American Theatre in the USA, is undergoing a series of renovations in 2019. It served as a meeting place to strategise during the Civil Rights Movement, and it was also the stop for many African-American artists. Langston Hughes, the American poet most notably known as the leader of the Harlem Renaissance, developed and premiered many of his plays at the theatre.

Contemporary

Visitors can enjoy a variety of art murals found throughout the city, including a larger than life pizza slice, Prince eating a donut and a giant bookshelf, all perfect backdrops for selfies. Also on display in the Ohio City neighbourhood is a two-story mural from London-based artist David Shillinglaw. More information is available at http://hingetownpublicart.com/.

Cleveland’s smallest art gallery, Phone Gallery, is located in a once abandoned pay phone box in the Waterloo Arts District and operates as an inventive location for art display.

The exterior of the recently-opened Pop Life Headquarters building in the Waterloo Arts District is covered in a vibrant geometric design by London-based artist Camille Walala. Pop Life is a collaborative brand rooted in art, design, and wellness. They work with artists and designers to create unique products and experiences. The building features a gallery, cafe, yoga & wellness studio, and residencies.

Cleveland also boasts the most concentrated square mile of arts and culture institutions in the USA, the University Circle neighbourhood, spanning both traditional and contemporary museums and historical sites. Here is located the internationally regarded Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall and the Cleveland Museum of Art and the quirkier Dittrick Museum of Medical History and the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Cinematheque.
