The FAA will allow airlines to reduce more New York flights due to the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers.

The agency will let airlines limit New York flights until October 28 without any slot  penalties.

The current waivers for this were due to expire on September 15, when the peak summer travel season gradually eases.

It impacts airlines including Delta, American Airlines, United and JetBlue at New York JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports.

“The relief provided by the FAA during the peak of the summer season has provided stability at the NYC area airports,” the FAA said.

According to the FAA, airlines have collectively reduced New York flights this summer by about 6%.

However it hasn’t impacted seat capacity which is up due to deploying larger aircraft.

The waiver also affects some flights at Washington, DC airports.

The FAA says the air traffic control workforce is down by about 50% of required numbers.

The agency is targeting hiring and training 3,000 new air traffic controllers in the short term.
