FAA seeks USD3.9 million fine against Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines is in trouble with the FAA again.
The airline is facing a fine of $3.92 million for incorrectly recording weight and balance figures on more than 20,000 flights.
It relates to 44 planes which operated the flights between May 1 and Aug. 9, 2018.
The correct pre-takeoff weight is essential for safety as it determines how much fuel and how many passengers can be carried safely.
The agency says Southwest failed to meet FAA mandated standards.
"Southwest’s operation of these aircraft was contrary to the airline’s approved weight-and-balance program and FAA-issued operations specifications," the FAA said.
Southwest has 30 days to respond to the FAA’s enforcement letter.
Southwest spokesman Brian Parrish said the record keeping issues arose as a result of the airline’s migration to a new computer system, and was resolved in August 2018.
