Fair Tax on Flying campaign to get major business backer
A Fair Tax on Flying is set to announce a major business backer to boost its campaign against rising Air Passenger Duty.
Three weeks after an Early Daily Motion was tabled outlining the effect the tax was having on investment, tourism and UK businesses and asking for a review, 40 MPs from the three main parties have added their signatures.
The campaign is encouraging businesses to sign a petition at www.afairtaxonflying.org/business and 17 chambers of commerce are already backing the campaign.
A campaign insider said it is due to announce the support of a "major business backer in the next week".
PwC research published in Feb 2013 found that abolition of APD would result a) in a significant increase in the UK’s Gross Domestic Product and b) would increase the revenues to the Treasury from other taxes as a result of this increased economic stimulus.
The overall APD tax take increased significantly on 1st April 2012 (after the Government implemented an 8% APD increase) with an increase once again from 1st April 2013.
Further rises are planned to take effect from April 1 next year.
