Famous Sydney rock could collapse without warning

A report has confirmed fears that a famous rock formation south of Sydney could collapse without warning.

The popular tourist attraction, Wedding Cake Rock, was recently closed to the public amid safety concerns.

A geotechnical assessment has now confirmed that it could collapse into the sea at any time in the next 10 years.

The report said the rock, in the Royal National Park about 30km south of the city, was ‘precariously balancing on the edge of the cliff’ and a collapse is likely within the next decade.

Last year, a university student was killed when he fell from the rock, which is a popular spot for people to perform stunts and share the images on social media.

Authorities are now hoping to find a way for visitors to be able to view the rock without being in danger.
