The Federal Government has announced that it will create a national accreditation system for tourism operators to discourage unethical practices.
Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson says the industry has been considering the move, which was recommended in a report five years ago, for some time.
He added that the proposal will be considered at a meeting with state and territory tourism ministers in March and that the system of nationally recognised standards will not aim to be punitive.
He said, “It’s not a question of new penalties and regulations, but a question of sitting down with industry and putting in place a process which ensures they compete to be accredited in the knowledge that it’s what consumers want , which is an indication of a good quality service at a reasonable price.”
