Federal mask mandate for planes, trains extended unto 2022

The federal mask mandate for transportation has been extended again into 2022.

The Transportation Security Administration requires masks be won on planes, trains and buses through 18 January 2022 amid a nationwide surge of the Delta variant.

Masks are also required at airports and train stations.

The federal mandate began in February 2021 and was then extended until 13 September.

The mandate has the power to issue fines to people who don’t comply

"The emerging evidence about the Delta variant demonstrates it is more formidable than the original virus," the CDC said.

"Wearing a well-fitting mask that covers your nose and mouth is a way to prevent germs from spreading between yourself and other people."

The extension is backed by the travel industry.

"Extending the federal mask mandate for travel makes sense for the current health environment. The universal wearing of masks in airports and on airplanes, trains and other forms of public transportation is both an effective safeguard against spreading the virus and boosts public confidence in traveling," the U.S. Travel Association said.
