Speculation of interest in ports and ferries group P&O by foreign rivals sent the company’s share price soaring. It put on 25p to close at 320p.

Intercontinental Hotels also added 10.5p to its value, climbing to 650p.

The FTSE 100 finished the day yesterday 13.3 points up, at 4962.70, and it was an excellent day for the FTSE 250, which closed on 6931.10, up 74.10.
