Finally revealed: 59 countries where the 14-day quarantine won’t apply

The Government has finally confirmed the list of countries where travel restrictions have been relaxed.

The list includes all the countries where the Government deems it is no longer necessary to impose a 14-day quarantine for returning travellers.

However, the relaxations currently only apply to those who are arriving back to England. They don’t apply to anyone arriving back into Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said he hoped there was still time for the rest of the UK to implement the same changes.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has also updated its global advisory against ‘all but essential’ international travel to exempt 67 destinations that it believes no longer pose an unacceptably high risk of Covid-19 from July 4. 

Under the new air bridge scheme, countries will be classed as either green, amber or red, depending on their levels of coronavirus.

While Green countries, such as New Zealand, will have no restrictions, amber countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, will have ‘reciprocal arrangements’ in place, meaning travellers from the UK will not have to quarantine on arrival.

Restrictions will remain in place for ‘red’ countries, including the US.

Despite Transport Secretary Grant Shapps saying this morning that Greece would not be on the list, the destination has been included, although it is not allowing UK flights until July 15.

Portugal, however, is not included – only the Azores and Madeira.

Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are already exempt. The Government will also be exempting 14 British Overseas Territories.

The Government said this list may be added to over the coming days following further discussions between the UK and international partners.

Information for travel into Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be published in due course by the Devolved Administrations.
