The cancelation of the inaugural cruise by Carnival’s new Fathom line was due to faulty fire doors.
The 710-passenger Adonia was prevented from sailing on its first voyage to the Dominican Republic on Sunday after a routine inspection uncovered several issues, notably the operation of the ship’s sliding fire doors.
"The cruise ship failed several portions of the inspection. The most serious remaining problem is with numerous sliding fire screen doors that are inoperable," the US Coast Guard said in a statement.
"The Coast Guard will continue to work with the cruise line to ensure both vessel and crew meet the standards to protect passenger safety."
A number of additional tests were required which originally delayed and then ultimately cancelled the sailing.
Initial Certificate of Compliance testing is mandatory for all ships that start sailing from the US.
While testing is still ongoing, it will not affect Fathom’s scheduled sailing on April 17.
Carnival said cruise passengers booked on last weekend’s sailing will be given ‘full reimbursement of expenses and credits toward future cruises.’
