South Korea has confirmed its first positive case of the Zika virus, after quarantining a man who had recently returned from Brazil.
The 43-year old was being treated in Gwangju city, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said.
"The patient was bitten by a mosquito during a business trip and did not have any suspicious symptoms when he returned," CDC director Jung Ki Suk said Tuesday.
"He is the first case of a Zika patient in Korea, and we are monitoring him clinically."
The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency of the mosquito-borne virus which first spread across Brazil and has been detected in dozens of countries in Latin America.
It is suspected of being the cause of microcephaly birth defects but the WHO says this is not yet proven.
The virus has not taken hold in Asia although isolated cases have been reported in several countries.
