Flight crew assaulted, robbed in Fiji
At least one Virgin Australia flight crew member was reportedly sexually assaulted during a New Year layover.
One other crew member was robbed, according to reports.
It happened in one of Fiji’s nightclub areas in Nadi on New Year’s Day, according to Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka.
The Deputy PM didn’t mention the airline but has been reported as Virgin Australia in media stories.
Gavoka is also Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
“Our thoughts and concerns are with them and for their health and wellbeing. These alleged incidents are regrettable,” Gavoka said.
The Fiji Police Force has questioned the sexual assault suspect but no charges have been announced yet.
Fiji’s Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, said: “Two of the crew members were victims of an alleged theft and rape after exiting the nightclub trying to find their way back to the hotel.”
A male crew member sustained facial injuries during the robbery.
Assistant Police Commissioner Mesake Waqa said investigators believe they were separate incidents carried out by two different suspects.
Gavoka also said reports that the crew members are being ‘detained’ in Fiji is ‘incorrect and false.’
Virgin Australia officials have flown out to Fiji, and family members of the crew are reportedly flying out.
