Hong Kong has cancelled all flights in and out of the city for the rest of Monday.
The Hong Kong airport authority announced at 4pm local time (9am UK time) that only flights that have completed boarding will be allowed to take off for the rest of the day. Flights en route to Hong Kong will be allowed to land, the airport said.
Thousands of protesters have returned to the airport to protest about the use of police force on Sunday, when demonstrators ended their three-day-long sit-in at the airport.
The disruption is the biggest yet to the city’s economy since demonstrations began in early June.
The airport said: "Airport operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been seriously disrupted as a result of the public assembly at the airport today.
"Other than the departure flights that have completed the check-in process and the arrival flights that are already heading to Hong Kong, all other flights have been cancelled for the rest of today."
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its advice for British travellers, saying: "A protest at Hong Kong Airport on 12 August has resulted in the cancellation of all flights out of Hong Kong for the remainder of 12 August. The airport authorities advise members of the public not to travel to the airport. Passengers should check their flight status on the Hong Kong International Airport website."
