Flights restart as the Philippines lifts Taiwan travel ban
Flights have started resuming between the Philippines and Taiwan after the Philippines government lifted a temporary travel ban.
The Duerte government banned Taiwan travellers from entering the Philippines two weeks ago along with Mainland China and other administrative regions Hong Kong and Macau.
It angered Taiwan officials who had been campaigning ever since to get the ban revoked.
Flights were resuming gradually on Monday although it will likely be a few days before it gets back to normal.
Cebu Pacific restarted Manila-Taipei flights while flag carrier Philippine Airlines will resume service on that route on February 21..
The news comes just as Taiwan reported its first death from the covid-19 virus
The 61-year old man had no history of travel to China but worked as a taxi driver.
Officials are scrambling to locate all of his passengers in the past few weeks, as he apparently had regular customers who frequently travelled from mainland China.
Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said government officials are mulling lifting bans for Hong Kong and Macau too.
