Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in 34 of the state’s 67 counties yesterday as Tropical Storm Colin brought 50-mile-per-hour winds and torrential rain.
Sandbags were distributed in Tampa and nearby cities amid warnings Colin would bring up to eight inches of rain and cause flash-flooding.
Colin was expected to make landfall mid-afternoon Monday in Florida, move across eastern Georgia and then towards, or near South Carolina, before heading out to sea later today.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the entire Georgia coast and the lower South Carolina coast.
Forecasters have described Colin as a lopsided storm, with tropical storm-force winds extending up to 185 miles east of its centre.
