‘Flying safer than grocery shopping’

A Harvard study has claimed that air filtration systems on aircraft can make flying less risky than supermarket shopping, but it warns that masks on flights are also essential to avoid the spread of coronavirus.

The study, which was funded by the aviation industry, says air filtration systems onboard aircraft filter out 99% of airborne viruses.

However, another study by Irish researchers in Dublin say 13 cases of coronavirus were linked to one passenger on a long-haul flight, which was less than 20% full.

Also, the international airline body IATA was recently criticised by a scientist behind another report for claiming that the report showed there had been only a handful of coronavirus cases linked to flights. Dr David Freedman said IATA’s interpretation of the report was ‘potentially misleading’.
