Food for thought

Agents are among the target markets for a catering company that offers made-to-order airline meals.

“We pay commissions in a variety of ways,” said Richard Katz, one of the founders of the Los Angeles-based SkyMeals.

He believes that any travel-related service such as agents can use this tasty service as a way to differentiate themselves, increase customer satisfaction and add revenue.

“There’s a lot going on in the area of airlines selling food. One company out of Washington, DC, orders meals ahead of time from airport restaurants, but we don’t think anyone else is doing what we’re doing,” he added.

No SkyMeals are pre-packaged. They are all made to order, he said.

The average price including packaging and delivery is $25 to $30. Everything on the SkyMeal menu is at room temperature, so no heating is required. The food is packaged in an insulated carry-on bag and delivered to the client’s door just before their flight.

Katz and his partner, Alan Levin, founded SkyMeals after the two brought a selection of French breads, cheeses and pastries before boarding a European flight bound for the US. The enthusiastic response of other passengers gave the pair their idea to start an airline meal service.
