Foreign Office issues warning following Mexico earthquake

Friday, 20 Sep, 2017 0

Mexico City Airport has re-opened following a powerful earthquake that struck central Mexico yesterday, killing more than 200 people.

The Foreign Office is advising people due to fly out to Mexico today to contact their airline before travelling. "If you are in the area, you should follow the advice of the local authorities," it added.

The British Embassy in Mexico City is closed and phone lines are intermittent due to structural damage. Britons who need emergency assistance have been advised to call +44 (0)20 7008 1500.

The 7.1 magnitude quake caused major damage in neighbouring states as well as to Mexico city.

It struck shortly after many people had taken part in an earthquake drill, exactly 32 years after a quake killed thousands in the capital.

The epicenter was near Atencinog in Puebla stae, about 75 miles from Mexico City.

Earlier this month, an 8.1 magnitude tremor stuck in the south of Mexico, killing at least 90 people.
