Foreign Office warns Gambia visitors of possible tensions

The Foreign Office is warning of political tensions that could cause disruption for holidaymakers in the Gambia.

It said the result of last month’s Presidential election is being contested by the current President and there is a risk of possible unrest as the handover date of January 18 and 19 approaches.

It warned that tensions could see Banjul International Airport being closed at short notice.

"You should follow events closely, keeping in regular contact with your tour operator and airline and continue to monitor travel advice and social media updates in the run-up to the handover in case tensions rise and the current deadlock isn’t resolved," it said.

It also advised holidaymakers to avoid large crowds and discussing politically sensitive topics in public.
