A former chairman of EVA Airways Corp is moving forward with his own rival airline and may start recruiting staff this summer.
Chang Kuo-wei was ousted as EVA chairman in a succession battle with siblings after his father, Evergreen Group founder Chang Jung-fa died.
Chang has unveiled new startup Starlux which will compete on international routes with EVA Air and China Airlines.
Based in Taipei, it will also have its own maintenance department, he said.
He described it as ‘an upscale international carrier’ in a private presentation and is mulling a fleet made up of long range Airbus A350-1000s or Boeing 777Xs, and possibly Boeing 787s.
Starlux was registered with the Ministry of Economic Affairs earlier this year but to get off the ground, it still requires approval from Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration.
