France to ban UK holidaymakers
France is banning UK tourists to curb the spread of the Omicron Covid strain.
All travel from the UK is halted from Saturday without ‘compelling reasons’ meaning no tourism is permitted.
However Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said truckers will not be impacted.
"To confirm, I have liaised with my French counterpart, and hauliers will remain exempt," he tweeted.
French nationals and their families will also be allowed to travel.
All others have been asked to postpone planned visits.
"In the UK government’s own words, the UK is facing a ‘tidal wave’ of the Omicron variant in the coming days," a French government spokesperson said.
The UK recorded nearly 79,000 Covid cases on Wednesday – the highest daily total since the start of the pandemic.
There are now more than 10,000 confirmed Omicron cases.
