Frontier dropping flights to 19 regional cities

Wednesday, 26 November 20143 min read

Low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is making big operational changes to its flight network, ditching smaller US markets in favor of larger cities.

"The Frontier business model is changing in many ways and the difficult decision to discontinue our service comes after careful analysis and evaluation. Historically Frontier has relied on connecting passengers flowing through Denver but we are now focused on delivering ultra-low fares to local traffic via point to point service," said a Frontier spokesman.

The carrier will withdraw from 19 regional cities, most of which had direct services to and from Denver.

Cities to get the chop include Bakersfield, CA, Oklahoma City, Newport News, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and Branson.

Several routes have already ceased and the remainder will all finish operations by the end of April 2015.

The carrier recently stated it would reduce capacity at its Denver hub due to rising costs and plans to focus on more established big city destinations.

Frontier has been expanding services to larger cities, including Chicago, Cincinnati, Miami and Philadelphia.

"The cumulative effect of these increasing costs is that connecting traffic is no longer profitable for our airline," Frontier CEO Dave Siegel said last week.
