US regulators told airlines and travel agents to include new fees for booking on the telephone or in person.
The move came as the US Department of Transportation (DOT) raised concerns that carriers are improperly listing the cost separately to keep base fares low and attract business.
Said the DOT in a notice:
“In order to avoid enforcement action, carriers and their agents who charge more for tickets not purchased over the internet must prominently disclose to customers that specific fares advertised are available only for tickets purchased via the internet.”
The agency said the fare strategy violates their full fare advertising rule. Violation could lead to fines.
