It’s out: the Gecko’s 2006-2007 Worldwide Adventure Brochure – the young adventure traveller’s ‘Bible’. It’s 132 pages filled with nearly 200 trips in over 40 countries – all small group departures with local leaders aimed at ‘getting under the skin’ of a place, whether you’ve got just a week or you’re on the road for a month or more.

For a short break packed with culture, the eight-day Northern Hill Tribe Trek showcases the best of the beautiful rural areas of Northern Thailand. On day one, the group leaves the hustle and bustle of Bangkok for Chiang Mai and the four-day trek, which includes stays with several different hill tribes including Karen, Lahu and Akha, all with their own distinct language, culture and spiritual beliefs. There’s also elephant riding and a float down river by bamboo raft.

The Northern Hill Tribe Trek costs just AUD$495 per person ex Bangkok and includes ground transport, local guides, accommodation and some meals. Trips depart regularly every month.

For the adventurer with plenty of time, South America Coast to Coast has the continent covered. Beginning in Lima, Peru the journey winds its way east towards Rio de Janeiro, passing through some of the most colourful nations in the world en route.

The trip includes hiking and camping along the Inca Trail with recovery time in Cusco before visiting Lake Titicaca to stay in the homes of the Uros Indians who live on the islands of the lake. It continues to the Bolivian capital of La Paz with its cobblestone streets and colourful markets. The mighty Iguazu Falls are a highlight of the trip, followed by a train trip aboard the ‘Serra Verde Express’ through beautiful rainforests, rivers and mountain scenery. The trip finishes in Rio de Janeiro, with its famous beaches, nightlife and Sugarloaf Mountain.

The 33-day South America Coast to Coast trip costs AUD$5195 per person, with a domestic flight payment of USD$226, and includes all accommodation, local guides, ground transport, breakfasts and other additional meals. There are nine departures through 2006.
