Going Places criticised over free child places claim
Watchdog rules advertisement was misleading because of hidden conditions
Going Places has been criticised by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for claiming it was guaranteeing free child places to its customers.
The agent advertised Airtours holidays in national newspapers, with the following captions: “no deposit”, “free child places guaranteed”, “free insurance” and “no flight supplements at any airport”. However, there were complaints that the free child places were only available at certain destinations – and that there was another condition; that two full-fare passengers were also travelling.
According to reports, Going Places defended itself, saying that the terms and conditions of sale were clear at the bottom of the advertisement, but the ASA stated that the advertisement must not be repeated.
It made the following statement: “The Authority considered the claim implied that all child places would be free. Because child places were free only at properties marked in the advertisers’ brochures with a free child symbol, the Authority considered the advertisement was misleading.”
