Google heats up fare competition
Google is on a path to compete directly with travel search sites such as Sidestep and Kayak.
The search leader added a new feature that connects users to travel agencies offering the cheapest fares.
The new feature, which is being tested, does not compete directly with the services offered by online travel agencies Expedia and Travelocity.
“But those agencies and others are being crowded somewhat by the search sites that perform the similar function of locating cheap fares,” said Hotelmarketing.com.
“It takes you right into the site that’s pre-populated with departure and arrival information and the dates. It’s a very interesting feature,” said Lorraine Sileo, an analyst at PhocusWright.
Google users can input specific flight inquiries between two points. The search results feature Web links to the sites that offer fare information.
The search feature now works only for certain city pairs.
