Google powers 75% of UK web seaches
Google’s domiance of the UK internet search arena has been demonstrated by lastest data from Hitwise.
Figures for the four weeks to April 1 show that Google was responsible for 74.8% of all UK internet searches – the nearest rival being MSN Search at 7.8% followed by Yahoo at 7.5% and ASK UK at 5.6%.
The Hitwise UK data reveals that ‘ebay’ remained the most popular search term in the four week period, representing 0.7% of all search terms. There were more than three times as many searches for ebay as the next highest volume term ‘amazon’ which accounted for 0.2% of all searches.
Easyjet was the most searched for airline followed by Ryanair and British Airways.
Across the travel sector the top 20 search terms were: easyjet, ryanair, cheap flights, expedia, british airways, thomas cook, travel insurance, easy jet, travelodge, flights, national express, cheap holidays, ryan air, bmi baby, thomson holidays, flybe, bmi, lastminute.com, bmibaby.
Hitwise UK research director Heather Hopkins said: “Google continues to dominate the search market in the UK – powering three quarters of UK internet searches.
“While Google is the dominant player, the race for the second most popular search engine is closely contested and will be interesting to watch folloiwng the relaunch of Ask at the beginning of February and the launch of Microsoft’s Vista in 2007.”
